Introduced by Sen. William H. Payne (R) on January 16, 2008, to appropriate $200,000 for promoting the U.S.S. New Mexico,a nuclear submarine, for educating the submarine crew about New Mexico, and for ceremonies during the submarine’s construction and commission. The Veterans’ Services Department reports the U.S.S. New Mexico will be the most advanced nuclear submarine in the world when it is fully commissioned in 2010, and that this is the first navy vessel to be named for New Mexico since the World War II BB40 class battleship was decommissioned.
